Wave in a Box: Los zombies caminan libres

Facebook Search Now Displaying Top âLikedâ Stories from Across the Web
In todayâs world of real-time status updates, search is evolving to account for the social nature of the web. Facebook is pushing forward in this direction with on-site search functionality that now displays search results â for Facebook and web content â based on âLikesâ and shares.Facebook appears to have quietly rolled out the beefed-up search offering some time over the past few days; it was first spotted by All Facebook.
From the looks of it, Facebook is ranking results based on how users engage with content via its social plugins. Itâs unclear how Facebook is defining its formula â the formula seems to account for shares and Likes from a memberâs friends as well as shares and Likes from everyone else to determine an itemâs placement.
Just recently, Facebook was awarded a search patent for âranking search results based on the frequency of clicks on the search results by members of a social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation.â
The company has yet to officially announce the new search functionality or explain how it works. Weâve reached out to Facebook for more information and will update this post when we know more.
For the time being, consider this yet another small step in Facebookâs designs to capture search share and harness the abundance of data available around their social plugins.

How Americans Spend Mobile Internet Time: A New Look
Nielsen applies a wide variety of methodologies to derive insights from our data for clients and the marketplace on what consumers watch. Our recently published âWhat Americans Do Onlineâ article produced a fantastic level of interest, including questions and suggestions about other ways to look at the data. Since this is how we typically work with clients, collaborating on how to get to the best analysis, we acknowledge that data alone doesnât always provide the complete picture.
The following alternative analysis, comparing category- and site-level data, for example, shows the different insights made possible by alternate approaches and interpretations. We have long taken pride in our leadership in measurement science and our participation in rich debate around methodology to arrive at the best insight possible. Weâre looking forward to continuing the conversation to develop new ways to look at measurement both online and in the mobile arena.
For the mobile element of the research, our original share of time analysis used the average time spent at a category-level, the broad groupings of websites that offer similar types of content. This time we went to a more granular level, looking at share of time by basing it on the total time at the individual site-level.

*The original share of time analysis was based on the average time spent at a category-level **The Videos/Movies category refers to time spent on video-specific (e.g., YouTube, Yahoo! Videos, Hulu) and movie-related websites (e.g., IMDB, Blockbuster and Netflix) only. It is not a measure of video streaming or inclusive of video streaming on non-video-specific or movie-specific websites (e.g., streamed video on sports or news sites).
**New Analysis
This alternative way of slicing the data still shows Email to be, by far, the dominant sector in terms of mobile time, although this dominance shrinks by a few delta points to 38.5% from 41.6%. Search is another that nets out with a smaller share, although by less than a percentage point from 7.1% to 6.3%.The share held by Social Networking remains very similar but News & Current Events comes out much stronger using the site-level analysis at a 7.2% share of time compared to 4.4% of time using the category-level analysis.
Share of time on Portals shows something more dramatic, with a change from 11.6% to 4.6% share of time, but this doesnât mean that people are spending any less time on Portal sites. Nielsen classifies both channels and brands into categories and so a category-level analysis includes both brands (e.g. Google) as well as channels under than brand (e.g. Google News). Using the initial methodology means that all Google time would be assigned to Portals (because Google is a portal) but using the site-level method means the Google News element would be assigned to the News & Current Events sector. Thus, the Portal element is limited to more general and entry pages rather than including content-specific sectors such as news.

Dominick Bonny: Violence, the Media and Dripping Sweat on Dateline
Sweat poured down my face as the Dateline correspondent questioned me.
And before you jump to conclusions -- I was not on To Catch a Predator.
My flop sweat was due to being interviewed about a story I worked on in college about a girl who was almost killed. Her name is Kristen Grindley. The case is ongoing and her ex-boyfriend has been charged. Dramatic.
Couple that with the fact that the town -- Pullman, WA -- is, for fear of being cliché, a quiet little hamlet nestled among the wheat basket of eastern Washington and it kind of ups the ante.
And, as much as Dick Wolfe and whoever does CSI would have you believe, young women don't normally meet mortal violence in Smalltown, USA.
After all, this ain't Aruba.
Plus Kristen survived. That's the kicker.
After waking from a coma she couldn't remember what happened. At least not well enough to give the prosecutor what he needed.
That's a lot of back story. Hence the reason I included links. But me dripping sweat was the way I began so to that I must return.
Sweat poured from me, a) because I was nervous, b) I've been cursed genetically and c) it was during that interview I realized why I hadn't gone into broadcast journalism.
The fact that I, the 25-year-old sweating mess of a student reporter, was the expert on this story spoke volumes to me about the state of the media.
Lil' 'ole me -- a print journalism kid in po'-dunk Washington -- got the scoop before anyone in New York or L.A. or Seattle. But more importantly, as a student and community-member, what happened to Kristen impacted me just as much as everyone else.
People had questions. They wanted answers. So did I. And I was a reporter. So I went about getting them.
I filed public records requests for police reports and found that Grindley's boyfriend had been arrested a few months prior for hitting her in public. The cop saw him.
I posted the records on my blog (which I shamelessly link to here). But during Kristen's coma, when there was not much movement on the case, the documents generated much discussion around town.
Naturally, everyone I spoke with assumed he was guilty. And to this I cannot attest. No one knows. Just because a jury announces a verdict or a judge bangs his gavel doesn't make a ruling gospel truth. I wasn't there on that road that night. The blood's dry.
What I do know is that, as a young journalist, covering this story confirmed my ardent belief in community journalism.
I felt what others felt and it's not bias - it's empathy.
Out-of-town reporters with camera and lights, microphones and makeup can't cover the story -- just the drama. Just the heat that real-life tragedy emits.
And that's why we hate the media. And our hatred might be well founded.
But the media and journalism are not always the same.
In this age of globalism everyone's looking back to the local. Buy local, eat local, be local. And it's because we've expanded everything -- communication, technology, commerce -- to such an extent that we've lost our sense of belonging to a community.
I'm still a kid in many peoples' eyes but I can see the writing on the wall. We are social animals and we communicate through story. We've been that way since we lived in tribes and we're still that way even though we live in condos.
Stories make us relate and feel empathy. And storytellers need to be invested in the community. Not as a part of the story but as someone who can understand what people are feeling.
That's the conclusion I came to while dripping sweat on Dateline.
What do you think?

NVIDIA Updates Mobile Lineup with GeForce 400M Series GPUs
Today, NVIDIA announced the GeForce 400M Series, a major addition to its lineup of mobile graphics processing units (GPUs).The 400M series features seven new processors, including the GTX 470M and GTX 460M monsters aimed at âenthusiast users,â as well as the GT 445M, GT 435M, GT 425M, GT 420M and GT 415M, intended for real-world use.
If youâre questioning why NVIDIA is releasing five GT GPUs, youâre not alone. While there will likely be a noticeable difference between GT and GTX models, the variations between any two of the GT processors are likely to be minimal.
Like all things currently graphics-related (or so it seems), the 400M will support stereoscopic 3D video. Those of you with a 3D TV will be pleased to know that the 400M GPUs include NVIDIA 3DTV Play software, which enables 3D content playback on compatible TVs.
More important, though, is the inclusion of NVIDIA Optimus, a technology that switches the GPU off in order to conserve battery power when its not processing graphics-heavy materials. This allows for flexibility in notebook longevity, while not degrading performance.
The GeForce 400M GPUs will be available in upcoming notebooks from Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba.

The Most Unforgettable Lies From Prominent Americans
Glenn Beck may have been caught lying, but he's far from the first American to do so.
Plenty of prominent people in American history have stretched the truth at one time or another. Sometimes the "untruth" is minor; others its effects are wide-reaching.
Here are some of the most memorable cases involving well-known Americans. Vote on those you think was the worst and be sure to submit those we've missed!

John Shore: And Yada, Yada, Yada ... Glenn Beck's a Christian
I don't watch TV. I mean, I watch stuff on my TV -- but "only" DVD's, since I don't subscribe to any cable service. I would, but I have issues with commercials. So I don't.
Ah, DVD's. Right now I'm (back on) a Seinfeld phase. Last night I watched the "Yada, Yada" episode. Classic!
Another reason I don't watch TV is because I'm afraid that if I do, I might accidentally watch Glenn Beck. And life's too short for that.
I can't tell you with what assiduousness I ignored this recent thing with Beck daring to screw with Martin Luther King's legacy. But I'd have had better luck ignoring a tornado taking out half my house. It's everywhere.
Ah, Glenn. What a swollen, festering pimple on America's giant pink butt.
Anyway, I've gotten a few emails asking for my take on Beck's "Restoring American's Honor," or, "Call to God," or, "Hey, look, everybody: Sarah Palin! Finally, a hottie cheerleader's talking to me!" big event last Saturday. So here that is:
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn.
An attention-crazed showman gets super-popular because he taps into the racism engendered by a half-black president. Lots of right-wingy types embrace him, and he becomes the wild-eyed public mouthpiece for whatever weird amalgam of conservative political philosophy and raw fear-mongering he can concentrate on long enough to start crying about.
He craves more power and attention, because that craving is all he knows. Having captured what he can of the political right, he starts eyeballing their longtime allies, the Christian right. But he understands that being a Mormon who was raised Roman Catholic might make him a hard sell with the evangelicals. But no worries, because he's got what a lot of mega-church leaders desperately want, which is legions of devoted fans and major media access. So at the John F. Kennedy Center the night before his big "Restoring America's Honor" rally, Beck holds an event modestly billed as "Glenn Beck's Divine Destiny"; thousands of Christian leaders wanting part of Beck's action attend (giving him, of course, a standing ovation); and voila: standing beside him on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial the next day are the likes of Rev. Richard Land, spokesman for the Southern Baptist Convention (which boasts 16 million members and more than 42,000 churches), and Jim Garlow, lead pastor of Skyline Wesleyan, the mega-church in La Mesa, Calif.
Said Mr. Garlow in a statement, "Beck is being used by God---mightily."
And the following morning, there's Beck on "Fox News Sunday," piously intoning, "There's nothing we can do that will solve the problems that we have and keep the peace unless we solve it through God."
God, Jesus, God, Jesus, God, Jesus, God, Jesus. Say them both enough times---and hey! You're a Protestant evangelical!
On "Fox News Sunday" Beck also recanted his statement from last year that "Mr. Obama is a racist with a deep-seated hatred for white people." He allowed as how he shouldn't have said that.
Now, he explained, his problem with Obama is that he isn't a true Christian.
"Obama is a guy who understands the world through liberation theology, which is oppressor-and-victim," said the sagacious Beck. "People aren't recognizing his version of Christianity. You see, it's all about victims and victimhood; oppressors and the oppressed; reparations, not repentance [read:"Watch out, White America: he's comin' to get you!"]; collectivism, not individual salvation [read: "He's a socialist!]. I don't know what that is, other than it's not Muslim [dingdingdingding!], it's not Christian. It's a perversion of the gospel of Jesus Christ as most Christians know it."
And in one weekend, he wraps up what he can get of the Christian market. (Not of course, that he's yet done with that crusade.)
Yaaaaaaaaaaaawn.
We have always had among us media-savvy megalomaniacs craving power and artfully appealing to the worst in people. We always will. When one of them starts getting real elected power, then we've got a problem. But as long as they're contained to posturing and braying on TV---which, in the end, is about nothing but selling cars and laundry detergent? Then I'll keep happily tuning out, and thanking God for the likes of Jerry Seinfeld and Steve Carell. On DVD.
